Attention Scouters of Hightower Trail District:

Our April Roundtables will be CANCELLED this month due to availability issues with both Briarcliff UMC and conflicts with Council meetings. We apologize for any confusion this might have caused.

Please plan to attend our May Roundtable on May 11, and meet our NEW District Director, Lee Harper! Our Boy Scout program will feature Tom Moorman, our District Advancement Chair. Tom will highlight some of
the new rank advancement requirements, emphasize the importance of registering as a Merit Badge Counselor, and discuss our monthly Eagle Scout Boards of Review.

· Bethany Lee spoke about Scouting For Food

o On 3/27 the AAC will be sorting food collected at the Atlanta Community Food Bank

o Participating Scouts will drop off collection bags at homes and pick back up one week later

o Age limit 8+ for sorting (4:1 cubs to adults)

· Reporter Sally Sears & Eagle Sout Bob Rule spoke about the proposed Lavista Corridor trail

o All of the sewer lines along South Fork and North Fork of Peachtree Creek are being replaced.

o The idea is to build trails and greenspace along the ROW.

o There will be many opportunities for service and projects in years to come

o Right now, they are working with the Lindbergh Lavista Corridor Coalition and the South Fork Conservancy and will be starting at the I-85 / Lindbergh area on April 17^th

o Ages – must be old enough to handle shovels & hand tools. (Bears / Webelos????)

· Per Alan Kemp - Clay Ipsen has officially resigned

· Pat Huey spoke about HTT Cub Scout Day Camp on 6/14 – 6/18.

o With the departure of Clay Ipsen, the camp is in desperate need of a volunteer Program Director

Atlanta Motor Speedway

“Scout Day at the Races” – March 6, 2010

All scout packs should enter through Gate 13 which is near the Display Lot on the front of Speedway property.

Admission

FREE – All scouts in uniform

FREE – Parent with every four scouts in uniform

FREE – Parking in all speedway general parking areas (shuttles will be running)

FREE – Additional brothers or sisters (ages 12 and under) with scouts

$30 – Additional parents or adults with scouts

AMS recommends that you park in the blue parking lot (map attached).

Grandstand Seating

All seats will be in the Champions grandstand on the frontstretch.

Pinewood Derby at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Scouts are invited to bring along their ‘Pinewood Derby’ car and compete against other scouts. The derby will begin 1 hour after the conclusion of the Atlanta 200 Camping World Truck Series race. It will take place in the Raceway Ministries tent located just across from gate 13 (map attached). All scouts participating in this special event will receive a commemorative certificate, suitable for framing, proclaiming they have ‘Raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway’.

Our award winning concession stands will be offering great race day specials and fun foods including cotton candy, funnel cakes, sno-cones, ice cream sandwiches and more.

Hi Scout Families! Here are the details you need for the trip this weekend. Please read this carefully, there are a few places that need cash. I've attached a pdf that shows what each family signed up for and which Wilderness outing you're scheduled for.

Unfortunately I can't change when you're attending the Haunted Tour or Wilderness Tour at this time. Guides have been hired, numbers submitted and finalized. If you can't make it, you'll have to find someone from the other group to swap with on your own.

MONEY: Thanks to the hard work of our Scouts, the Pack is going to cover all activity costs for your Scout. I will handle the payment of the Wildnerness Tour and Pirate House dinner for all Scouts. For the remaining activities - Haunted Tour, Trolley Tour and Riverboat Tour - you will receive cash in an envelope to cover these costs for your Scout if you signed up ahead of time. People signed up for Friday night Haunted Tour will receive their money from Julian Roberts. Everyone else will receive theirs from me at the Pirate House dinner. If you change your mind about any activities, please be kind and return these funds to the Pack. They can be used for future outings.

HAUNTED TOUR - Leaves 7p Friday and Sunday -
pls. see attached sheet if you don't remember what night you signed up for.

PAYMENT: $5/person, to be paid by cash or traveler's check directly to the tour guide.

LOCATION: The tours will begin at the front gate of Colonial Park Cemetery, located in downtown Savannah at the corner of Oglethorpe Avenue and Abercorn Street. Guides will be dressed in period, colonial-style costume.

PARKING: All metered, on-street parking spaces are free evenings after 5pm and all day Saturday and Sunday. Parking is first come/first served, so persons arriving separately may need to allow a few minutes to circle the streets to find parking. On most evenings, it isn't difficult to find spaces within reasonable walking distance from the cemetery.

SATURDAY WILDERNESS TOUR - see attached sheet for session you're signed up for.

PAYMENT: Bring check made out to CUB PACK 528 for $37 per non-Scout person in your family to Debbie Maddox at the Pirate House Dinner. Tour has been pre-paid. If you skip this, we'll still need payment from you for it.

LUNCH: Bring your own picnic lunch. You'll eat after the boat tour if you're in the morning session and before if you're in the afternoon. Lunches can't be eaten on the boat.

ITINERARY: Morning session boat leaves at 9:30AM, returns at 12:30 PM plan to be at the dock by 9:15 AM. It's approx. 30 minutes from hotel to dock. Afternoon session leaves at 1:30 PM, returns at 4:30 plan to be at the dock by 1:15 PM.

The Fort Pulaski portion of the tour has been canceled due to expense. You're welcome to explore the fort on your own and/or eat your picnic lunch there. It has covered picnic tables. Otherwise, enjoy a leisurely morning or afternoon.

CLOTHING: Everyone should be prepared with layers of clothing; packs to keep layers in when not being worn. Knit hats and gloves might be appropriate for the boat ride, in case it’s windy and cold. Feet shouldn’t have to get wet, but then these are boys, so spare socks/shoes or rain boots might not hurt.

Driving Directions: It’s about 9 miles from downtown to the entrance to Bull River Yacht Club and Marina.

You’ll head East on Bay Street, curving downhill to merge onto General MacIntosh Blvd. (pass Marriott on your left at the curve). At the light, turn left onto President Street Extension. Stay in left or middle lane, to remain on this road. In a little less than 2.5 miles you’ll go up and over, curving to left) to merge onto US 80 East, which you follow for about 2.5-3 miles. There’s a stoplight with a Wendy’s and gas station/convenience store on your right, and ahead of you on right you’ll see a very tall building. At that building is the Bull River Yacht Club/Marina. Get in right hand lane (rt. Turn only), and turn into entrance. Park only in spaces designated for Marina (Don’t park in the condo spaces).

It should take between 15-20 minutes. (Note that GPS units regularly send folks past this location. If you see the Ft. Pulaski entrance on your left as you drive US 80, you have passed the Marina entrance by about 5 miles.)

SATURDAY DINNER AT PIRATE HOUSE

TIME: 7:00 pm

PAYMENT: $25/adult $20/non-Scout child CASH Pls. bring exact change if at all possible. We have a signed contract here so if you signed up and don't show, we'll still need payment from you.

MENU: Buffet featuring Salad with choice of dressing, Southern fried chicken, chicken fingers, fried Tilapia, BBQ pulled pork, Macaroni & cheese, Green beans, Corn, Biscuits, Iced Tea or coffee and dessert of the night.

ADDRESS: 20 East Broad Street, Savannah, GA It's approx. 11 blocks from the hotel, you can walk, drive or the Savannah DOT trolley has a stop there. We'll need to ask at the hotel where the closest DOT stop is to get on.

SUNDAY TROLLEY TOUR

TIME: Every 20 minutes beginning at 9AM, lasts 90 minutes. You can also ride the trolley around Savannah until 5p. PAYMENT: $15/adult and $10/child payable upon pickup. They'll take cash or credit.

SUNDAY RIVERBOAT TOUR - Savannah Riverboat Cruises

TIME: leaves dock at 2p, plan to arrive by 1:45p.

LOCATION: Buy tickets at 9 East River Street. Ask hotel for directions or have trolley drop you off.

PAYMENT: $18.95 adults, $9.95/12 and under Kids under 3 are free. There are snacks/drinks available for purchase on board.

Dear Pack Family:

This year the Church opened the new community center, and repaved the
parking lot, both projects that came from special pledges. These
projects were needed and the Scouts will clearly benefit from them.
However, this has been an expensive year for the church, and we are
finding ourselves in a short fall at the worst time of the year. We are
a small church, and the membership is very generous in their pledging.
But they need our help. We all realize there are a lot of charitable
demands on folks, especially around the holidays. To provide support
for the Church, there will be a collection basket at the dinner Thursday
for family members to donate if they would like to. No pressure.

The Church did not ask me to do this, I reached out to them and made
this offer. This is a Tax Exempt organization, so any donations would
be tax-exempt. If you do write a check, make it out to U.H.U.M.C. and
note it is for the General Fund.

· District Award of Merit - If you feel that someone in Scouting has rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting, or both and deserves extra-special recognition above and beyond Trailblazer, you can nominate someone for the District Award of Merit. Hi Scout Families, It's time for the annual Big Trip! This year, we've selected Savannah as our destination. For those of you new to the Pack, the Big Trip takes place every January to a destination selected at our Pack Planning Meetings. It's a trip geared towards the whole family - no camping with a mix of outdoor and city things to do. Below is all the info you need, please read carefully, action items are bolded. Please note there are several key deadlines for RSVP as well as info on what you need to reserve for yourself vs. what I'll be handling for the Pack. Directions will be sent out closer to trip date. I’ll admit I’ve never actually been to a District Round Table, but from what I understand, they are very informative and give one a better idea of what is going on in our own district and the AAC as a whole, as well as providing some practical advice for running your dens, packs, troops, what-have-you. (This next one sounds particularly fun, since it involves PWD)

I’d like to invite you to attend with me next Tuesday at 7:30 at Briarcliff United Methodist Church. To All Cub Scout Leaders,

This is the second reminder about a very special Roundtable coming up on Tuesday, Dec. 8. It is also a special request to everyone receiving this email but I will get back to that down the page.

Tuesday at 7:30 pm the Cub Scout Roundtable will feature Mr. Dean White, award winning Pinewood Derby car designer and builder. You may have seen some of his cars on display at previous District Pinewood Derbies. They are amazing creations and Mr. White will be telling us how he builds these from a block of wood. This is information that you can take back to your dens and packs to help your Cub Scouts create a masterpiece. We may even talk about some speed issues that you can pass along. This Roundtable is truly a "must attend" event.

Roundtables are held every second Tuesday of the month at Briarcliff United Methodist Church. We start at 7:30 pm. Cub Scout Roundtables are open to all Den Leaders, Pack Leaders and parents. Briarcliff UMC is located at the intersection of Briarcliff Rd and Shallowford Rd. Parking is to the side of the church and we meet around in the back of the complex. Just walk around the back driveway and you will see the lights and the tan shirts.

Okay, now for the special request. As hard as it is to believe, there are Den Leaders and Pack Leaders not on the Hightower Trail Yahoo Email Group. They never know about Roundtables like this one and miss out on the information sharing that can benefit their Cubs. December 17^th:7pm: Winter Potluck: Each den will be responsible for a different element of the meal. The assignments will be given out at the den meetings on December 10^th.

Leave No Trace Awards (LNT)
Pack 528 will award all the Leave No Trace Award recipients together in January. Have your sons draw a poster that illustrates the LNT guidelines (it's one of the requirements). We would love to display all the posters at the January Pack Meeting. As your son completes a requirement, or practice the LNT guidelines on an outing, email Gary Guerino (commchair@cubpack528.com) who is keeping track of Scout progress.

For the other councils still getting their orders finalized or placed with us - we would like to get all of the orders in by December 15, 2009. We need to get our orders placed with the factories as soon as possible so we can get these order shipped in the spring.

Take a look at the Hot Jambo Deals we have just finalized and begin checking off some of the items you and your council will need for Jamboree 2010. I've attached a price list so you have one file for all of your "Hot Jambo Gear". Some of the items, like Tents, the Camp Cot Large, and the Synergy, are a review of information you should already have. We added some special pricing for the Lightweight Cot, several Chairs, and a few Lightweight Sleeping Bags, because a lot of you were inquiring about quantity pricing for these items. In addition to all of these items, we have another product special to bring to your attention.

Special Jambo Series Logo - We have designed a logo that we will use on some special duffles and our special day pack called our Timber Lake. A lot of you have asked for duffles and day packs so you have something to help you get your personal items to Jambo. These featured items will not only look cool at your basecamp but be great mementos for after Jamboree. Check out the Jambo Series logo on http://www.scoutdirect.com/. We will still need to meet minimum order quantities on the regular size duffle and the Timber Lake day pack. Interest and orders for the large duffle have already been met, so if you're interested in the regular duffle and the Timber Lake, please get your orders sent in soon.

Listed below are a few more details to keep in mind with your Jambo Orders.

Delivery - Orders placed with by September 30, 2009 can start receiving their gear early February 2010. If you wait and place your order by late November/December your order will have an April delivery date

Combining Orders - Some of the items listed on the attached spreadsheet might not be items your council will be purchasing. If that is the case for you, please talk with your troop along with other troops in your council to see if you can combine orders. This will allow you to take advantage of our larger quantity discounts and lower freight costs.

Shipping Savings - We had a couple troops take advantage of our past cot sale and they saved a ton of money on shipping because they ordered enough to fit on skids and trucked to a location with a dock door. Some of you may not have access to a facility with a dock, but if you can think of a family member or friend that does please take advantage of that when thinking of where you want your goods shipped.

One example, we shipped 100 cots to a location in Texas and it cost them under $5.00 per cot when they used our trucking service. As you may know shipping heavy items like tents and furniture it can be freight intensive to ship. On average one cot normally would cost around $15.00 to ship, so you can see the savings by using this method.

Lastly, and this might help with your Jambo planning, or it might just help you upgrade your normal camping gear.

Special Self-Inflating Air Pad Deal - We have some excess inventory on our Comfort Series Air Pad Regular. This pad has a retail price of $64.99 and your normal scout cost is $35.74 but we need to move some of these. We have them priced as low as $19.50 (see attached price list for more details). I'm not sure, but I don't think we've ever offered anything at 70% off! I know that this might not be an item you were thinking of for Jamboree but please talk to your troop and see if you could get enough people interested to combine an order for your everyday scouting needs. Wow, how the time flies. I can't believe our summer is already coming to a close.

I wanted to take a second to remind each council to get their orders placed by September 30, 2009. This email has focused on our tents since they are an important category for Jamboree. I have been on the phone and emailing a lot of council leaders and volunteers and it seems as though every Council has a different guideline for what gear they are purchasing. Some councils will be purchasing all the gear while some are only supplying the tents and leaving the chairs, sleeping bags, duffels, day packs, cots, etc up to the troops/individuals. I will be following up with a special email with our "Hot Jambo Gear" order form shortly that will focus on all of the "non-tent" items.

The December Cub Scout Roundtable will be devoted to how to build one-of-a-kind Pinewood Derby cars. Mr. Dean White, national award winning Pinewood Derby car creator (adult level), will be our guest speaker and he will be bringing some of his fantastic cars and the tools he uses to create them.

If you missed last year's Roundtable featuring Mr. White, you missed seeing about 25 of the most eye popping creations imaginable. We had a very informative talk on how to add coolness and speed to these blocks of wood. This is the kind of information that you can take back to your dens and packs to help your Cubs create their own version of cool.

Please save the date of Tuesday, December 8 at 7:30 pm and plan to attend Hightower Trail's Roundtable.

All Den Leaders, Pack Leaders and parents are welcome to attend.

Roundtables are held the second Tuesday of each month at Briarcliff United Methodist Church, at the intersection of Shallowford Road and Briarcliff Road. We always start at 7:30 pm.

Pack 528 Leadership Changes

We regret to inform you that Peter Rzeszotarski has resigned his position as Assistant Cubmaster and he has informed our leadership team that he is leaving Pack 528. We are sorry to see Peter go and we wish him and his family all the best.

In light of this change, we are very pleased to announce that Dickson Hand has agreed to take on the Assistant Cubmaster role for the remainder of the Scouting year and to serve as the Pack's Cubmaster next year. As usual, Dickson has proven to be ready, willing and able to step up to any challenge in service to Pack 528. Since joining the Pack in the Fall of 2006, Dickson has served as a trustworthy Den Leader; he has been the driving force behind the technology and logistics for our Pinewood Derby; he has served as our Appletree Campout Coordinator; and he has quietly served as the Pack's most consistently reliable volunteer and leader.

We are so grateful to Dickson for all that he has done for Pack 528 and we look forward to the continued success of our program under his leadership.

FW: Missing Pocketknife from Campout

Hi Everybody,

My son, John Thomas, has a missing pocketknife from the campout this weekend. He was whittling at the Site C picnic tables on Saturday evening, then went to help gather up his buddies. He can't remember if he left his pocketknife on a picnic table at the site, or put it in his pocket, but when he looked for it later he couldn't find it. It may have slipped from his pocket,and/or was picked up by someone who didn't want to leave a pocketknife loose (Yes, he's lost a corner of his whittling chip for not keeping up with it better.)

If you or your children found the following knife, please let us know: A red Swiss Army knife, larger size, about 4-5 in long, 1 inch wide. It has the typical cross on it, the big knife has a ridged blade, and there is a saw along with a bottle opener and several other tools in the knife.

I'm hoping an adult picked it up. We looked and couldn't find it at camp, though there's a possibility that it's somewhere in the grass/swamp/mud between campfires B and C.

Hi, I'm the First Aid coordinator for the campout, with help from Phil Mancuso-Ungaro. Following is some info for everyone, and please review the campout safety rules at the following Pack website: http://www.cubpack528.com/docs/AppletreeCampsiteRulesandGuidelines2009.pdf.

If there are any first aid needs during the camp out, the Pack first aid kit will be available in the pavilion at all times. Please bring your own family first aid kit for your family's primary use, and for during transport and any outings away from the campsite. Phil and I will help out with first aid, if available, but each den should have someone designated for first aid in case we're not available, and while your den is away from camp.

The following is information about safe pocketknife use (only allowed for Webelos and Bear den boys who have earned their Whittling chip):

No boys will be allowed to use pocket knives without immediate adult supervision, and no boys should bring a pocket knife unless they've already earned their Whittling Chip, or they plan to earn it on the campout (Bear and Webelo dens only).

Any boy who is using a pocket knife must have their Whittling Chip on their person at all times and understand that adult leaders may ask to see it. If boys aren't following safety rules while using the pocket knife, adult leaders may restrict its use and/or remove a corner of the Whittling chip as a warning. If boys have all corners removed from their chip they are no longer allowed to have a pocket knife at Scout functions until they earn the Whittling Chip back.

‘Take Me To Your Leader’ is the cry for a fun filled day of adventure on Saturday October 10^th at Bert Adams Scout Reservation. Plan to attend and receive a patch, fun, excitement, a little advancement and more fun! Enjoy Archery, BBs, Water Rockets, Games, a Moon Walk and more! The fees will be $10 for the first Cub Scout in each family, $5 each additional child in each family and $2 per parent or adult. IMPORTANT: Information about the Appletree Camp Out...

Alright everyone, here we go! The camp out is this weekend and we’ve just got a few bits of information and reminders for you.

First and MOST IMPORTANTLY, please go to the Appletree Campsite Rules & Safety Guidelines and familiarize yourself with the policies put in place to make sure we all have a fun and successful fall camp out. To ensure everyone’s safety, it’s up to all of us to make sure that we are aware of the rules and safety guidelines and that they are being followed. General information, including directions to the camp ground can be found on the Appletree page of the Pack 528 website. Please be sure to print out and bring the Appletree Campout 2009 document. It contains important information like the gate entry code, recommended items to bring, maps of and to the location, and other great stuff. In addition, since it’s cold and we’ll be in the mountains, we recommend you check out this great article on staying on staying safe and warm during a cold weather campout. Pay close attention to the section on sleeping.

Second, we’re asking that everyone planning to attend please bring some firewood.

Also, please be aware there will be morning and evening flag ceremonies during the campout. The morning ceremony will be at 8:30am and the evening ceremony will be at 5:00pm. Each ceremony will be lead by a different den. Scouts leading the ceremonies or in the color guard should be in either their Class A or Class B uniform. Others in attendance are welcome to wear either of their uniforms, but are not required to do so. Below is the schedule:

This was a great Pack conservation project for Lake Allatoona and all the Scouts working on their World Conservation Award. The Pack had over 40 Scouts, Scouters, and parents participate. Some of the items, like Tents, the Camp Cot Large, and the Synergy, are a review of information you should already have. We added some special pricing for the Lightweight Cot, several Chairs, and a few Lightweight Sleeping Bags, because a lot of you were inquiring about quantity pricing for these items. Thank you for your help this year. Your assigned area for cleanup will be Harbor Town Marina. Check in will begin at 9am and the cleanup will last until 12 noon. Following the cleanup will be a picnic at Riverside day use area. Below is direction to the Picnic. Upon arrival please have the following things with you, a list of all who are in your group with phone numbers and addresses, working gloves, water and snacks. You will give your list of people to your check in person. Only one person needs to check in per group. They will give you your bags, and patches and a map for you to follow while cleaning. Please adhere to all safety instruction that is as follows:

- Avoid areas of shoreline that are too steep for safe walking
- Avoid large objects that are too heavy to lift, drag, or roll
- Double bag heavy trash and/or glass
- Stay together as a group or utilize the buddy system
- Small children & non-swimmers should wear a personal flotation device
- All persons riding on boats should wear a personal flotation device and are required by law, if under the age of 10
- Use caution when picking up glass-try raking it using a stick onto something to place in the garbage bag
- Avoid encounters with snakes and other animals
- Should you come across the following items: please note the location so that these items can be collected at a later date-do not attempt to collect these items!
*        Potentially toxic chemicals (i.e. batteries) or debris (i.e. animal carcasses)
*        Drug Paraphernalia or other “bad” items (i.e. condoms)

If you need to Google your cleaning location the physical address is 7370 Galts Ferry Rd. Acworth, GA 30102. For those of you that are camping with us, you can arrive at your camp site as early as Friday September 11th after 4pm and leave on Sunday September 13th. Please make sure you cleanup your camping area on your departure. Dispose of any garbage in designated trash cans and make sure the lids are securely replaced. Please make sure any fires in fire pits have been put out properly.

After the clean up there will be a picnic at Riverside Day use area. There will be free food, prizes, and fun. Please join us to celebrate a wonderful job you’ve done to preserve our greatest natural resource. The directions to the picnic area are as followed.

Pack 528-
We still have about 12 youth mediums and 12 youth larges remaining. They are $10.00 each.

Several adults have requested t-shirts as well, but we are out of adult sizes. I will reorder a small quantity. Please let me know if you want one and what size. They will be more than $10.00 per shirt but not sure how much yet until we order. Expect as much as $15.00 per shirt.

Due to the absolutely incredible response we’ve had to the Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup scheduled for 9/12, we’ve rescheduled the Lavista Rd. cleanup to 9/27. So, WE WILL NOT BE HAVING THE LAVISTA RD. CLEANUP ON 9/13 as originally scheduled. Please mark your calendars for 9/27 and plan to meet us at Briarlake Elementary in your “Class B” uniforms, ready to work.

Cub Scout Adult Training Opportunities

Dear Parents and Cub Scout Leaders:

I wanted to make you aware of several training opportunities in the next four to six weeks. Leaders may have some of this info already.

First I wanted you to be aware of the training opportunities within our own district, the Hightower Trails District.

Cub Scout Leader training consists of three parts. They are (1) New Leader Essentials a.k.a. "This is Scouting" (avialbale online at http://olc.scouting.org/), Cub Scout Leader-Specific Training and Youth Protection Training. Prior to attending the Cub Scout Leader Training program is requested that you complete the Fast Start Program online (also at http://olc.scouting.org/).

On Saturday September 19th there will be a Cub Scout Leader Training Session.
    Where: Chamblee First United Methodist Church (note: the location may be changed.)
    When: From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

On Saturday September 26th there will be a BALOO training session (a.k.a. Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation which is suplemental - At least one BALOO trained leader is required on each cub scout outdoor activity, so please try to get this training completed). This course will provide you with the necessary training to conduct pack or Webelos den campout overnight activities.
    Where: 4217 N. Park Drive, Tucker, GA in the Troop 129 Scout Hut
    When: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

As you may know, this year there is a focus on service and conservation project participation at Pack 528. Scouts can earn the prestigious World Conservation Award (WCA) by completing the WCA requirements for his rank (click here) and participating in a Pack conservation project. The Great Allatoona Cleanup is that opportunity to fulfill the conservation project requirement. So...MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!...and come out to the Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup to join Pack 528 in helping to cleanup some shoreline.

Influenza Precaution... - Please Read!

Dear Parents and Scouts,

As you know, the "Swine Flu" (H1N1) is of major concern this cold and flu season. For this reason we are requesting that you NOT bring your children, or yourself for that matter, to Scouting events (pack meetings, den meetings etc) if any of you are running a fever or experiencing flu like symptoms: fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I have attached more information on the H1N1 virus from the CDC to this email. Thank you in advance for your attention in this matter as well as your encouragement of the use of hand sanitizer and the washing of hands.

DEN LEADERS: Don't forget....

This Thursday, August 27th, is not just the date for our first den meetings. It’s also when we announce our first service project; the “Fill the Bucket Campaign”. Once again, these are large (approx. 5 gal) buckets that are filled with cleaning supplies and distributed to victims of floods and other natural disasters around the world. We’ll be working in cooperation with UHUMC. The church Outreach Team will be providing the buckets. Pack 528 and members of the congregation will provide the supplies to fill them. The list of supplies is attached to this email.

Here’s what Todd had to say about his experience “filling a bucket” with Oliver.

“…it was surprisingly educational; we talked about each item and what it might be used for by families cleaning up after a flood or other natural disaster. Ollie was able to make the connection very easily with his Cub Scout promise of duties to God and country and helping other people; so I think it can be a great service project as long as parents keep the scouts involved in the work. I was able to buy all the items for a little under $40 but I suspect others might do it more cheaply. The items that tripped me up were the work-gloves, the clothesline, the trash bags and -- especially! -- the handi-wipes. I ended up visiting Dollar Tree, Ace Hardware, Publix and Kroger before I'd found everything on the list (but with hindsight I could have done it all between Dollar Tree and Kroger)..”

Again, the idea is for den leaders to announce the project at Thursday’s den meetings. You’ll need to decide, as a den, how many buckets you’ll commit to filling and report that number to pack leadership by email to communications@cubpack528.com. We’ll then pass that number along to the Church Outreach team so they know how many buckets to provide. It’s important to keep in mind that the emphasis here is the Scout promise of helping others and service to the community, not filling as many buckets as possible. We don’t just want people making donations toward the purchase of supplies. We want this to be something each scout can participate in and learn from, so be sure to keep that in mind when deciding on the number of buckets your den can fill.

The deadline for this is September 10th. We’ll collect the supplies and scouts will fill the buckets during the den meetings that night. The campaign officially ends on Sunday, September 20th where the buckets will be presented before the congregation during the church service. Pastor Weber has asked if we could have a few scouts helping to carry in buckets for the presentation that day. This will be a great start to renewing our commitment to community outreach and helping others.
